On February 20th Fritz James presented a Forum at the University of Iowa Libraries. The event was titled “Binding & Business” but no one was sure what Fritz would say. No one, not even attending co workers from LBS were sure.

Let’s consider some working interfaces of the book; the cursor, the haptic and the mirror. We will adventure with the reader, the physical codex and the content. Let’s also consider these domains of the book with reference to initiatives out in Iowa.

"Freneticism and disappointment, excitement and fear. The history of technology is filled with bursts and busts. Looking backward is not to retreat into the past but to prepare for the future."

The CMR was named by Carol Kent as she edited a BookNote #3, “Collection Maintenance Repair for Publishers’ Cased Books”. That was in 1994 at BookLab when we were adding library services to limited edition binding services.

Have you ever noticed that each book will shelve between any of its neighbors? Across a wide, wide expanse of books from diverse periods and cultures they will all shelve together happily. But take any single binding in hand and you will find that they all opened differently.
